At around 3:00AM Valentine’s Day morning, I was having trouble sleeping and logged on to Twitter. The breaking, or should I say heartbreaking news was that South African double amputee sprinter Oscar Pistorius had shot and killed his girlfriend, Reeva Steenkamp. Early reports stated that Pistorius thought Steenkamp was a burglar and subsequently fatally shot her as she was attempting to deliver a Valentine’s Day surprise. As the news developed, Pistorius was taken in to custody and charged with murder. So was it an honest mistake, or did Pistorius murder Reeva Steenkamp?
I don’t know all the facts, and I can only hope that this was a tragic mistake and not an act of malicious and deadly intent. What I do know, is that there’s nothing funny about this situation by any means. All of the jokes on Twitter and the ESPN.com message boards absolutely disgust me. The first of which came from Twitter user @sasgendo moments after the news, responding to Reeva Steenkamp’s tweet “What do you have up your sleeve for your love tomorrow?”:
You don’t need someone to screen your tweets, “Gendo”. You need someone to kick your teeth in.
The jokes on ESPN.com message boards are mostly directed towards Pistorius, but are just as tasteless if not as heartless as this one. A beautiful, talented woman is dead. It’s no time to make jokes. Rest in peace, Reeva.
