Kill Count: (14 Walkers, 1 dude with a backpack)

If you thought the second half of Season 3 of the Walking Dead was soft so far, you’re probably right, but last night’s episode should change your mind. This episode was chock-full of ridiculous walker kills, suspenseful scenes, and a “holy shit” moment we’ve been waiting for since Season 1.
If you didn’t know who that was the instant his armored mask was pulled off, you’re not a true Walking Dead fan. It’s Morgan! The dude that saved Rick after he first got out of the hospital way back when The Walking Dead started. Rick was all like:

And I was like this season just got really interesting.
Before we meet Morgan though, Michonne is driving while Rick sits shotgun and Carl rides in the back. They speed pass a man with a backpack desperately asking them to stop. Michonne flies by him, not a word is spoken. Damn, that’s cold, but I get it. Dude could have a gun on him or something and they’re on a mission.
Now I’ve never been shot before, but after Carl shot Morgan in the side of his bullet proof vest, how the hell did he get knocked out? Knocked down, I’d get it, but knocked out for what seemed like at least 20 minutes? Didn’t make much sense to me.
Morgan has turned into an extreme survivalist, rigging his hold-up with boobie traps for both walkers and people. He’s cleverly placed live animals in cages surrounded by sharp sticks that turn walkers into shish-kebabs, and rigged up his crib with tripwires like a deranged Kevin McAllister from Home Alone. The welcome mat covers a hole with sharp objects that’ll turn your feet into minced meat, and just check out this contraption at the top of the stairs:
Set off the tripwire, get an ax in the face with “told you” scrawled on it. Look at the blood on that thing! Gruesome. Morgan has this place down on lock.
After Rick and Michonne carried Morgan up the stairs and put him on a cot, they found the guns they were looking for and more. Morgan has enough firepower to kill an army. Just what the crew needs to defend themselves from/attack the Governor.
I was hoping that Morgan would have a clear head and join the group, but the dude is more crazy than Rick is. Just check out the photo at the top of this post. Morgan’s writing on the wall makes it looks like he’s in a mental institution, not a heavily defended hold-out. When he finally wakes up and tries to kill Rick, then asks Rick to kill him, we know he’s off his rocker. Funny, I never thought there’d be a scene in this episode where Rick is the most sane person in the room.
Morgan’s son Duane is dead, and that’s sad as shit, because the man’s got nobody. Apparently he tried to reach Rick on the radio that he gave him a few weeks after Rick headed for Atlanta, but it was too late, they had already moved on.
But hold up, a few weeks? He came looking for Rick a few weeks later and expected him to be there? C’mon man! There are dead people trying to eat the living everywhere you turn. An offer like that stands at a few days, a week tops. Morgan should have known he was S.O.L. after he waited almost a month to find Rick.
As Rick was watching Morgan, Carl goes off to get a picture of his mother so his baby sister will know what she looked like. He’s lucky Michonne came with him, because she saves his ass when the bartender walker grabs him, and without her he wouldn’t have gotten the precious photo in the end. Now I wonder if he’ll make another trip into town to get a picture of Shane so the baby can see what her father looks like…
The episode ends with the car slowly driving past a bloody mess of a partial body and, you guessed it:
The backpack! Poor dude never stood a chance. Of course they roll back and pick it up. Can’t let those supplies go to waste.
