Contrary to reports swirling around the Internet, New York Yankees closer Mariano Rivera would rather not be the starter for this year’s MLB All-Star Game.

When asked why he’d rather not start the game, Rivera said, “And the reason why I say that is it’s not what I do. What I do is close the games, I don’t start the games. It’s a privilege and honor, but I’m not contemplating it.”
Detroit Tigers manager Jim Leyland has the honor of picking the starter for the American League.

Rivera, who is the best closer in Major League Baseball history, is having another fantastic season. Rivera is currently tied with two other players for the league lead in saves (26) and has a 1.61 ERA.
Rivera has been a closer for the entirety of his career, so it only seems right that he’d get a chance to do what he does best in his last career All-Star Game – and that’s close it out.

It’s no guarantee that Leyland would even pick Rivera either, as his own pitcher, Max Scherzer, is off to an 11-0 start to the season.
