Everyone loves beer and sporting events. With baseball nearing the World Series, basketball pre-season underway and football weekly battles in full effect, your chances of enjoying beer watching a sporting event are high. Bud Light, Coors Light and other mass-produced beers are becoming monotonous and you’re not sure what the vendors are pouring anymore. You’re tasked with picking up some beer for you and your friends to enjoy at a tailgate or at your buddy’s house. Here’s a breakdown of beers that are worthy of picking up at your local distributor but won’t scare you away from a finely crafted beverage. Weihenstephaner Hefeweissbier – You might be asking yourself, what does that say and where can I find it? This Hefeweizen is imported from Germany and widely available in most major cities. With a high rating from other beer drinkers, its smooth style will rival your normal Blue Moon selection – it’s far superior to Blue Moon if you ask most people. If you happen to pick up this one, make sure you pour it into a tall skinny glass because it’s the only way a hefeweizen beer should be enjoyed.
Ballast Point Sculpin IPA – Newly introduced in 12oz cans, this American IPA is a popular one amongst Southern California beer snobs. I am not aware of its availability on the east coast but if you know someone on the West Coast, maybe they can send you some to enjoy. Sitting at a nice 7.0% ABV, this beer will provide you with a triple threat – fruity at first taste, bitter towards the middle of your sip and end with a malt finish. I know that sounds like a lot to handle in a beer, but, believe me your tailgate experience will be enhanced if you enjoy this gem from Ballast Point.

Blue Point Toasted Lager – There’s a lot of good things to come out of New York and this American Amber beer is a prime example. Brewed just enough to provide a middle-of-the-road body and carbonation, this one won’t overload your taste buds. I would suggest this one to anyone not sure what style they want. You’ll satisfy your palette and you’ll impress the annoying beer snob in your crew.

These are just three examples of what to drink but if you’re familiar with this scene at all, you know that it’s not easy to choose. My suggestion would be to try different flavors and make note of the beer style that gives you goosebumps – yes, that happens. Next time you’re at the store, be sure to not pick blindly because “it’s what you’re used to”. Not only will you impress your friends with some new beer choices, but there are upsides to not choosing another fizzy yellow beer.
