The Walking Dead Season 4 Episode 5 “Internment” recap: Father’s Day

wo fathers on the brink that are trying to keep shit together despite living during the Zombie apocalypse. That’s what this episode could have been called but it wasn’t so we can pretend, right? This episode works well in juxtaposition to last week’s episode which Rick was also a part of. Because Rick is the main character so we must always see Rick or feel his presence. Rick is important. But in this episode, there is also a lot of Hershel. So just for this episode, we must also feel that Hershel is important.

So Rick comes back from his food run and Maggie is all like “Where’s Carol?” Rick explains all of this while Maggie’s horrified and then asks her if she would have done the same thing to which she replies in the affirmative. Then Rick says we can’t second guess the decisions they make. WHAT THE HELL, DUDE! HE JUST SECOND GUESSED HIMSELF WHEN HE ASKED MAGGIE IF SHE’D DO THE SAME THING! Because of that, I tuned out most of what Rick said throughout the episode. There was probably a whole bunch of stuff where Rick’s telling Carl that he must protect him from seeing the madness in the world and cheesy crap like that or implications of the sort but I pretty much had it with Rick saying things and stuff now. Meanwhile, Hershel is hoping to cling on to whatever shred of humanity that he has left in the quarantined ward in the prison. He does this by impaling the the plague’s victims in the head after they’ve passed away from other’ people’s view. Yeah, that’s great because they aren’t imagining what might happen to them after they die. Also, the brown doctor is all like “Yeah, I’m going to die. There’s a point that you reach where there is nothing you can do for me.” How would you know that if no one has survived?!?! I’ve just about had it with the dialogue on this show. I WANT TO STAB MYSELF IN THE EARDRUMS.

But what The Walking Dead does well are the scenes where shit goes completely bonkers. Shit goes completely bonkers in this episode. Hershel goes to close everyone’s cells near the halfway point of the episode when he notices Sasha having passed out in her cell so he goes to help her. A couple of cells over, some chick died but reanimates as a walker. Meanwhile, Glenn goes to help the guy that they were aspirating earlier but finds out he’s dead. Well, Glenn starts to have a coughing fit when that dude reanimates. Also, the fence is getting run over by zombies while Rick and Carl are trying to reinforce it. When it rains, it pours. Rick and Carl mow down the sea of zombies with machine guns while Maggie breaks into the sick ward and helps Hershel with the zombie-palooza in there. Darryl brings Bob back with the meds and he’s starting to administer it to people as quick as he can so he can start boozing already. All of this has caused Hershel to go to the brown doctor’s cell (who died btw because there can only be one character from the Asian continent for an extended period of time) with his bible so he can bawl like a baby.

Now, I would have been cool with this episode if it ended there but no, of course it didn’t finish there. We find out that The Governor is lurking nearby scoping out the prison! Great, here comes the Governor. I’m pretty sure the next episode will deal with that lunatic. However, if I were running the show, I wouldn’t merely brush over the “Rick bouncing Carol” saga and the possible aftermath of that. I feel like the whole explaining to Daryl about Carol thing will barely get run because THE GOVERNOR WILL DOMINATE ALL OF THE STORY LINES.
