Derek Jeter Set to Retire at End of 2014 Season

Facebook should really think about changing their slogan after another athlete took to the social media site to announce their retirement. 

On Wednesday afternoon, Derek Jeter hopped onto his fan page and announced his retirement from MLB and the New York Yankees following the 2014 season, an announcement that is HUGE for the sport but not terribly surprising. 

Jeter is entering his final year of his Yankees contract and will turn 40 in just under 4 months. He is a fantastic player, who sadly missed more of the 2013 season with lower-body injuries. Trying to re-up with one of the powerhouse teams in the league following said injuries would probably bring a string of conversations neither Jeter nor the Yankees front office is willing to have.

There will be plenty of time to eulogize Jeter’s Hall of Fame career when his retirement tour starts, just as his Yankees teammate, Mariano Rivera did last year.

The 13-time All-Star and five-time World Series champion has spent his entire career with the Yankees. He made his MLB debut in May 1995. The 39-year-old said Wednesday that he made the decision months ago and “could not be more sure” that it’s the right time to leave the game.”
