Today we celebrate the 237th birthday of the greatest country in the world.  The good ol’ US of A!  Old Glory will be flying proudly all across the country today while we all celebrate freedom, pickup trucks, dogs, beer, baseball and BBQ. That got me thinking…which athletes or teams have made me feel patriotic?  Who makes me proud to be an American?

Velasquez-vs-Silva1

Heavyweight Champion Cain Velasquez once again putting his belt on the line as he gets ready to face Antonio “Big Foot” Silva tonight at UFC 160.

In the co-main event, former heavyweight champ Junior dos Santos is looking to get another title shot, but he’ll have to beat the heavy-handed Mark Hunt to get his chance.

Will we see a Velasquez/dos Santos rematch in the next heavyweight title fight, or can the two underdogs pull the upset and crash the party?

Wrestle Mania

This post may anger a few rednecks and/or men with Peter-Pan syndrome, as I firmly believe that professional wrestling is for children.  If you’re above the age of 16 (I’m being generous here), the only acceptable reason for watching the WWE is ironically or for drinking game purposes [DISCLAIMER: Total Sports Blog does not condone underage drinking in any way]. Some of my first memories involve early superstars like Jimmy “Superfly” Snuka, Hulk Hogan, The Ultimate Warrior, and the Undertaker. This past Tuesday, a key part of that era of wrestling, Paul Bearer, passed away in his hometown of Mobile, Alabama.

No rules, no holds barred, bring out the foreign objects, and extreme measures were taken.  This countdown has a special place in my heart due to the fact most of it is made up of ECW originals.  The original Extreme Championship Wrestling was more than just the third string quarterback to WCW and WWF.  ECW produced some of the most innovative wrestlers to ever grace the squared circle.  Not to say ECW was the only company to produce hardcore legends. Once upon a time, tag team wrestling meant something to the business.  Believe it or not there was a time where the tag team titles were a vocal part of pay per views.  Frankly, it is complete disgrace to the trailblazers of the division that tag teams are not as involved as years past.  Hopefully there will be some accountability of the brass to plug some storyline into a lost art.
