Jack Taylor of Division III Grinnell College just dropped 138 points on 51-108 shooting (27-71 3 pointers, 7-10 freethrows) in a 179-104 victory over Faith Baptist Bible, redefining poor sportsmanship on his way to the NCAA Basketball record for points scored in a game.

“It felt like anything I tossed up was going in,” said Taylor, a 5-foot-10 sophomore guard. Really, Jack? You missed more than half your shots. Let’s put things into perspective:
- 108 shots is 1 shot every 22 seconds of game time.
- Jack Taylor didn’t play the entire game, he shot once every 20 seconds.
- In his 81-point game in 2006, Kobe Bryant shot once every 73 seconds.
- No Division I team has ATTEMPTED 108 shots in a game this season.
- Nobody else on the Grinnell College team attempted more than 6 shots

If Taylor scored 138 points in a close 179-175 game, I’d be all for it. One guy putting the team on his back, breaking the record in an epic victory would be awesome. But that’s not what happened here. Taylor dropped the record breaking sum in a blowout. The game was likely more than over by the time he crossed the century mark. Where’s the sportsmanship?

As someone who’s been on both sides of lopsided outcomes in their athletic career, nothing disgusts me more than a player or a team purposely running up the score or accumulating stats for the sole purpose of breaking a record. 108 shots is asinine. I’m sure Jack Taylor is proud of himself, but he shouldn’t be. Last time I checked, basketball is a team game. I commend the players on Faith Baptist Bible for not losing their cool, because someone probably should have speared Jack Taylor at some point in the 2nd half. Shame on you, Jack Taylor, and shame on the Grinnell College head coach for allowing this to happen.
