Robinson Cano has named his price and it’s an expensive one. Earlier this morning it was reported the Cano wants a 10 year deal worth $305 million. After leaving super agent Scott Boras, Cano recently signed on with Roc Nation, which is an agency run by rap artist Jay-Z. It looks like Jay-Z and company are looking for some big bucks for the best second baseman in baseball.

With this report coming out, the New York Yankees are in some trouble. They are not in the best financial situation and on top of that their core group of players are aging fast. The Yankees still have a significant portion of Alex Rodriguez contract to pay, which runs through 2017. Rodriguez is not only expensive, but his play is not where it use to be. He hits like an average 3rd baseman and his glove at third base is also average. The captain, Derek Jeter, has an uncertain future. He is getting older and was injured most of this past season. The Yankees roster is old, depleted and now has to deal with the loss of Mariano Rivera and Andy Pettitte.
So what does this mean for the Yankees and Robinson Cano? It very well could mean the end. The last time the Yankees signed a long term deal like this it was with Alex Rodriguez and they don’t want the same result with Cano. The Yankees have also seen the likes of Albert Pujols and Josh Hamilton sign huge contracts and so far both are not producing they way they should. I don’t believe that the Yankees will want to sign Cano for that type of money. On the bright side for the Yankees, Cano loves this team and the city, but unless Cano lowers his asking price I see an end to this relationship. Cano wants money and a team with young talent and a strong core of players, which the Yankees do not have. Look for the Los Angeles Dodgers and the Chicago Cubs to compete against the Yankees in the Robinson Cano sweepstakes.
