Today Keith Law, who is the minor league/prospect guru to end all all minor league/prospect gurus ranked the Mets farm system 6th best in Baseball. This is pretty damn good especially considering that three years ago when Sandy and his boys took over the Mets were the 26th ranked farm system. Yeah I know, having a good farm system doesn’t always mean anything and a lot of prospects don’t pan out blah blah, blah, blah. But this ranking shows that the farm system has been successfully rebuilt in just three years and that is the first step to become a long term contender. The Mets did it in the 80’s…or did you think Gooden and Strawberry fell out of the sky?

Ok so some of you aren’t impressed or excited by good farm systems. Instead, you would like to bash Sandy based on his major league moves which for the most part of have been stop gaps and reclamation projects. He’s signed a bunch of guys to minor league contracts, 1 year deals, and even handed out a couple of 2 year deals. These signings have ranged from kind of good, to pretty terrible. The good end of the spectrum includes Marlon Byrd, Latroy Hawkins and Chris Capuano. While the bad end of the spectrum includes Frank Francisco, D.J. Carrasco, and Shaun Marcum. But all of these moves meant nothing to this team long term. So, its really a waste of breath complaining about them. Sandy’s best moves so far have all come via trades. He has made three brilliant trades that helped to restock the farm system and one trade that seemed like a good idea but turned out to be awful (Pagan for Torres/Ramirez). Of course people will only focus on the bad trade.

1) How could Sandy draft Brandon Nimmo instead of Jose Fernandez!??
Draft picks and prospects are stupid unless someone drafts a player who is really good am I right? I am so sick of people bringing this nonsense up, at least 10 other teams passed on Fernandez and even though it would be great to have him on this team, the Mets have more than enough pitching depth in their organization so knock it off.
2) Why isn’t Sandy more creative!?
Lol wtf? That’s like saying “Why doesn’t Sandy trade imaginary players for good players!?” or “Why doesn’t Sandy trade Bobby Bonilla’s contract for a player to be named later?”. He only has so much to work with or should he be pushing the Angels to swap Mike Trout for Lucas Duda?
3) Sandy traded Omar’s players, that doesn’t count!
Fine we can give Omar credit for bringing in Beltran and Dickey….even though Dickey was a garbage signing who luckily turned into a 20 game winner (Oh also Sandy was the one who signed him to a 2 year deal after the 2010 season) But let’s be real Omar Minaya could sign a mean free agent but was clueless when it came to trades. (See: Xavier Nady and Billy Wagner) Omar would have just let Beltran finish out the year and then walk away for nothing after 2011 and probably would have signed Dickey to an 8 year contract because knuckleballs.
4) Sandy didn’t trade Reyes!!
True, Reyes should have been traded (Even though he had a hamstring injury around the trading deadline) But I don’t think it was his call on whether or not to trade him. I think the Wilpon’s said “No Sandy, we’ll lose too many fans and $$$$!” and Sandy was like “Aight” Also I believe that in his heart of hearts Sandy thought there was a slim chance that he was going to be able to sign Reyes. Just kidding Sandy has no heart he’s a cyborg.
5) Sandy refuses to spend!
Refusing to spend and not able to spend are two different things. I think the Wilpon’s have Sandy working within some tight budget constraints because A) the team has sucked for so long and B) They owe money to everyone including me. Trust me, Sandy didn’t get hired and say “Thanks for the job, now get ready to save some money!” When the Mets finally do become a winning team again whether that’s 2014 or 2015 you will see the payroll edge over $100 million but until then no. I promise Sandy isn’t sitting there and shaking his head in disapproval at Fred Wilpon every time Fred comes into Sandy’s office with some money.
My only complaint about Sandy is that he needs to wear a bowtie, because wearing bowties is how you build a winning team!
