True Detective is an unforgiving show. It’s look into the fractured male psyches of the two main characters really is a tough thing to watch even though you still can’t keep your eye from the television. When you also consider the cold and bleak outlook it has on the world around us, Nic Pizzolotto paints an atmosphere that is equal parts gripping and terrifying. Isn’t that telling about who we are as people?

This episode was much more straight forward than any of the other episodes before it. Rust has still been investigating the Dora Lange case on the side. One of the scenes included the girl that he and Marty saved from LeDoux headquarters and it was truly chilling. Also, don’t call it a comeback but Preacher Joel Theriot (oh, how has he fallen) and Reverand Billy Lee Tuttle make appearances as suspects that Rust interrogates and both of them seem pretty deceiving even though Theriot sheds a little bit of light on the sitch. However, once his higher ups catch wind of what he’s doing, they aren’t happy about it and Marty isn’t exactly backing him up as well. In fact, they take his badge and gun for it.
As much as this episode was about moving the story/case along, this episode was about what broke up the partnership between Rust and Marty (as well as Marty and Maggie) more than anything else. With both of our protagonists leaving their interrogations, the 2012 investigators attempt to throw a hail mary by bringing in Maggie to interrogate but she is as equally as deceiving as Cohle and Hart themselves. We find out during the flashback scenes, that Marty ends up sleeping with one of the prostitutes that he tries to “save” from the bunny ranch they visited in ’95 and Maggie finds out about it. Maggie ends up sleeping with Rust in order to dissolve his marriage with Marty which also ends Cohle and Rust partnership (which is made official in one of the best street brawl scenes I’ve ever seen). Until we see the final scene of the episode where our heroes potentially link up again.

Observations/pictures/gifs/twitters,etc.
– Rust is super cold during this interrogation scene with a woman who is guilty of munchausen syndrome by proxy:

One of the best moments of the episode:
– tru-detective.tumblr.com is a hilarious tumblr that combines 2Chainz rhymes with screenshots from the show. This one right here is a work of genius:
I will have some more theories and thoughts on last night’s episode tomorrow after another rewatch and a bit of time processing.
