Overall: B
I’ve been sporting a beard for the past 5 months or so, but I keep it trimmed rather than to approach full-on hipster status. For the purpose of this review, though, I did let it get a little longer than I normally wear it so I could test out the products better.
First, I tried the Grooming Oil, or “beard oil” as this type of product is commonly referred to. The product conditions your beard so it’s less rough to the touch that it would be without it. I have sensitive skin, though, and I broke out a little after using it for a few days. I don’t think this is typical of the product, I blame this one on my parents and the genes they passed on to me.
I then moved onto the Beard Butter, and had solid results. It softened my beard and kept it neat. If you have sensitive skin like myself, this may be your best option.
The Pomade is a styling product offered by Detroit Grooming that I used on my hair. I’m a big fan of pomade over other hair styling products like gel or wax, and I was happy with the results. Highly recommended if you’re looking for a compact hair styling product.

From the Detroit Grooming website:
THE CORKTOWN BEARD OIL
Named after the oldest neighborhood in Detroit, we’ve been told that our Corktown Beard Oil scent is reminiscent of the old world. Perhaps of a simpler time, when a man never let a day go by without putting in hard work, and knew how to kick his feet up when he got home to relax with the smell of sweet tobacco in his pipe. Corktown is an easy scent that is sweet and yet mild enough to let you know that you can relax all day as our pleasingly scented oil goes to work in your hard earned beard. Expertly blended, the cedarwood, vanilla, and tobacco, will draw you back in your chair with that rare kind of satisfaction.
Our foundation of Sweet Almond Oil is loaded with many skin and hair benefits. Rich in vitamins A, B and E, Sweet Almond Oil helps in maintaining moisture levels of the skin and gets absorbed quickly without blocking pores like so many other oils. Whether you’re looking to improve your complexion, moisturize better, soothe skin irritation by relieving dryness, nourish your skin, or even cure the chapped lips hiding in your beard, this is exactly what you need. That’s just your skin! In the hair? Well, almond oil is rich in magnesium, gets rid of split ends, and leaves your beard shiny and soft. It is a reparative solution that can be used daily to saturate deeper than most oils and reverse damage. It contains a higher content of mono-saturated fatty acids than any other oil, making it the most intensely moisturizing oil available. It’s chock-full of antioxidants and proteins to repair your skin and hair!
I noticed immediate results after using the Grooming Oil. My beard was softer, more manageable, and looked well maintained. A couple of days later, though, I got 2 or 3 pimples under my beard that I didn’t have before using the oil. Now I’m not saying I have the best complexion in the world. My skin can be quite sensitive. I’m almost 32 years old, and still get a zit here and there (I thought puberty was supposed to end at some point), but I definitely had some sort of reaction after using this product. On top of that, I wasn’t a fan of the scent the Corktown Grooming Oil left on my beard. I can’t put my finger on why, I just didn’t like it. Beard oil isn’t for everyone, I guess.
Beard Butter
From the Detroit Grooming website:
BEARD BUTTER – DETROIT GROOMING COMPANY
Not a fan of a liquid oil and want something a bit more solid? Want to control some of the stray hairs that are on walkabout on your face? Do you love the way coconut oil and shea butter make your beard look and feel? Well, you’re a bit high-maintenance! But that’s where DGC Beard Butter comes in! We’ll take care of all your needs, right here, in this 2 oz. jar!
The Beard Butter was my jam. I applied it daily for a week and had great results. No zits, just an awesome, soft beard. It smelled a little bit like butterscotch, but not overpoweringly so. If beard oil irritates your skin, the Detroit Grooming Beard Butter is worth a try. Just make sure to buy a few jars as you can go through this stuff rather quickly. I feel one jar will last a month if you use it sparingly.
Pomade
From the Detroit Grooming website:
Pomade – Vanilla scent
In the early 19th century bear fat was a common pomade ingredient. No bears here. In fact, our products aren’t tested on animals. That is, unless you count us. Detroit Grooming Co. pomade will get you where you need to go in style. We take great care with our formulation and the way it makes you look.
When I was in high school, everyone was using hair gel to style their ‘do. Gel makes your hair look wet and rigid at the same time, which is totally an unnatural look. As I went through college, people were using wax, paste, and creams. The looks from those products are more natural to the eye, but sometimes even more rigid than gel. It wasn’t until recently that I discovered pomade, and I assure you there’s no better product for your hair.
Detroit Grooming Pomade, like other pomades, gives you a natural look with minimal hold. You can style your hair the way you want and still be able to run your hands through it without them getting stuck. The vanilla scent smells good, and the product is high quality. Highly recommended.
Overall
Detroit Grooming makes high quality shit. You can tell they really care about producing a quality product with the bearded man in mind. They may be a bit pricey, but if you’re looking for a solid alternative to the crap you’ll find at the drug store, check out their website http://detroitgrooming.com/ and give them a try.
