The nice people at Chisel Shave Club reached out to me and asked me if I had ever tried traditional wet shaving before. I hadn’t. It’s intimidating to go from modern 3-5 blade razor cartridges to traditional 1 blade razors. I thought for sure I’d slice my finger trying to insert the razor into the handle, or cut my throat using the traditional razor. Neither happened. Crisis averted.
The first thing I noticed was how nice the presentation was, and how high-quality the contents of the box were. You’re not getting cheap shit here. You’re getting a box full of grooming products you can be proud to own and use. From the handle to the blades to the aftershave, Chisel Shave Club provides only the finest products.
Their best deal is a 12 month subscription for $26.99/mo. It seems expensive, but you’re getting a box full of stuff, not just a razor and some shaving cream. If you’re serious about your grooming habits, it’s worth splurging on yourself a bit. I searched on the internet to see how much it’d cost to piece this set together, and already hit the $27 mark with the face wash and aftershave alone- so you are definitely saving by going with Chisel. FULL REVIEW:
From the people at Chisel Shave Club:
We’re a new subscription box that started in late 2015, dedicated to helping men discover the lost art of wet shaving. Most men today shave with expensive cartridge razors and chemical filled gels, but traditional wet shaving is starting to make a comeback. Many of those who’ve made the switch find that they get a superior shave with less irritation and enjoy the process of shaving much more than using a cartridge razor. The wet shaving routine does require more deliberate care and effort but for those willing to spend the time on it, the rewards are well worth it.
One of the primary benefits to wet shaving is the ability to personalize the shaving routine. Everyone’s skin and facial hair is unique, so different blades, soaps and other products can affect the quality of your shave pretty significantly.
We help men find the products that work best for them by sending a selection of wet shaving products to our members every month. Products in each box include: shaving soap, razor blades, aftershave, lotion, pre-shave oils, and other men’s grooming items.
Pricing:
We currently offer a month to month subscription for $29.99/mo with the option to add on a safety razor handle and shaving brush to the first month’s box for an additional cost.
We also offer:
A 3 month prepaid plan for $28.99/mo
A 6 month prepaid plan for $27.99/mo that comes with a free safety razor handle and shaving brush in the first box.
A 1 year prepaid plan for $26.99/mo that comes with a free safety razor handle and shaving brush in the first box.
After opening the box, I noticed a bunch of packing material covering the contents. I took them out one-by-one and dumped the box. This is what I got:
A traditional razor with travel holder, 10 blades, shave soap, after shave, face wash, body soap, and a shaving brush. If you couldn’t tell what the products were by looking it them, Chisel includes these handy inserts:
I was really impressed by the razor handle. It had some cool detailing on it, including the Chisel logo at the base and the Chisel Shave Club name at the top:
I admit I was a little clueless at the start. I didn’t even know how to get the top off of the handle so I could put the blade in. When I eventually figured out it screwed off from the top, I dropped it. It didn’t break. It’s a sturdy metal material that can likely take a little abuse.
I also didn’t know how tight I had to screw the top back on after inserting the blade. “Is the blade supposed to bend?” I asked myself. “I think it’s supposed to bend.” So I screwed it on tight, and got ready for my first traditional wet shave.
The instructions say to soak the shaving brush in hot water to soften the bristles up. It was pretty soft already, so I just ran it under some hot water after I got out of the shower. Chisel recommends using a glass or the palm of your hand to get some lather going with the soap. I wasn’t about to run out of the bathroom and get a cup, so I used my palm. It worked just fine, but I wish Chisel would provide a plastic dish or something to use, not only to get your lather going but to store the shaving soap in after use.
I’ve had a beard going for a few months, and my wife seems to like it so I wasn’t about to shave it off completely. I figured I’d use the products from the Chisel Shave Club to line it up, though. So I trimmed my beard down a bit and made sure there was something left on the neck to shave. Here’s the before pic:
and After:
You’ll notice it’s not the cleanest shave in the world. This is just one pass. In traditional wet shaving, you lather up, shave with the grain, then lather up, and shave again against the grain. It’s a process. I didn’t go for a second pass this time around as I was happy enough not to slice my throat and bleed all over the place, which was a somewhat serious concern of mine at the time. The next time I shaved 2 days later, though, I went for the double pass. I had much more confidence and the shave was as clean as you can get, and my skin felt great afterwards.
So the handle, the razors, the shave soap, and the shaving brush are all legit, high quality products. The face wash is solid, too. It doesn’t dry out your skin and smells nice. The real star of the Chisel Shave Club box is the Brickell Instant Relief Aftershave. This stuff is incredible. It smells like heaven and the cooling sensation you feel when applied to your face is something I haven’t felt since lounging on the dock of my hut in Bora Bora as the ocean breeze came through on my honeymoon. I want a gallon of this stuff under my sink so I can never run out of it.
This trial wasn’t all thumbs up and nostalgic delusions of grandeur, though. I have some gripes with the Dr Squatch Cedar Citrus Soap Bar. I literally almost got a splinter in my balls while using this soap. A splinter. In my balls. I threw it in the trash after one use. I don’t recommend anyone use this product unless they like splinters in their balls. Seriously. It was a close call.
So overall, I recommend Chisel Shave Club for the razors, handle, face wash, aftershave, shave soap, and shaving brush. Dr Squatch can keep his $7 ballsack splintering soap bar. One last time, cop your monthly subscription here at www.chiselshaveclub.com and use promo code HookTSB10 for 10% off.
