It was the joke that went too far. Before Sergio Garcia’s racial comment, the media battle between Tiger Woods and Garcia was almost comical. They were going back and forth taking shots at each other. Woods called Garcia a whiner and Garcia responded by telling the media, “That’s probably right,” and he went on to say “It’s also probably the first thing he’s (Woods) told you guys that’s true in 15 years. I know what he is like. You guys are finding out.” Now while those comments were a little harsh, it still remained a silly argument.

That all changed when Garcia made one comment. At the European Tour Awards dinner Garcia was asked if he would be inviting Woods over for dinner during the U.S. Open. Garcia’s response went too far. Garcia said, “We will have him round every night. We will serve fried chicken.” For those of you that do not know, eating chicken or fried chicken is a racial stereotype put on African Americans.
The response by Garcia was too much and completely unnecessary. The feud was fun and good for golf. It gave people something to watch at the next tournament to see if there will be any words exchanged between the two. Now, all that potential expansion of the sport is gone because of a racial comment. To make things worse, he gave a “sorry/not sorry” comment the next day by pulling a, I’m sorry if I offended anybody line. Really? Do the sport of golf a favor and respect the game and one of it’s most elite players.

Sergio, as a man, it is acceptable to admit you are wrong for something and in this situation you were totally wrong and out of line. You pretended you didn’t know what you were saying and tried to displace the blame instead of taking on all responsibility for the comment. Due to your actions and now being placed in a “racist” category in sports, expect to lose respect in the game of golf and in life.
