While the Cool Ranch Doritos Locos Tacos from Taco Bell are the holy grail of tacos, Taco Bell Fiery Doritos Locos Tacos are just aight. They’re better than the Nacho Cheese DLT, but can’t touch the Cool Ranch version. The Fiery DLT is a nice way to switch it up, though, as the 2 Cool Ranch DLT plus 1 Fiery DLT may be the perfect taco order at Taco Bell.
Full Review:
The Taco Bell Fiery DLT are so new, they don’t even come with their own special cardboard taco holder. It came in the same taco holder you’d get with a Cool Ranch or Nacho Cheese DLT, so I discarded it before taking the picture. Take a look at the photo above, that thing is bright red. I’m honestly scared to take a poop later and see what color that thing turned my insides.
The shell feels a lot like the Cool Ranch DLT shell, and isn’t as “powdery” as the Nacho Cheese DLT shell. It’s got a little kick to it, but I wouldn’t go as far as to say it’s “fiery”, or even remotely hot. Taco Bell definitely avoided going overboard on the spiciness of the Fiery DLT.
The Fiery DLT is perfectly complimented with the Taco Bell Verde Sauce, much like the Cool Ranch DLT is perfectly complimented with the Taco Bell Fire Sauce. I enjoyed this taco, but I wasn’t crazy for it. As stated in the quick review, mixing up your 3 taco order with 1 Fiery DLT in between 2 Cool Ranch DLTs makes for a solid meal.
Taco Bell really dropped the ball not going with my favorite Doritos flavor, Spicy Sweet Chili. If you’ve never had Spicy Sweet Chili Doritos, get them. They come in a purple bag, and are the most delicious chips known to man.
It’s confusing because Taco Bell advertises the Fiery DLT as a taco coming out of a purple bag, yet the Spicy Nacho Doritos that I assume the Fiery DLT is based on comes in a dark red bag. I understand that it may look too close to the red of the Nacho Cheese bag and that T Bell wanted Fiery to have its own identity, but they could have avoided confusion entirely if they just went with Spicy Sweet Chili DLT in the first place. If there’s ever a 4th Doritos Locos Taco, T Bell will be shooting themselves in the foot if they don’t go Spicy Sweet Chili.
In the end, the Fiery DLT just tastes too much like the Volcano Tacos that Taco Bell has had for years. The only difference is the spicy taste comes more from the shell than the “Volcano Sauce”, but the likeness is still too strong. If I had to rate all of the tacos Taco Bell currently offers, I’d say Nacho Cheese DLT is the lowest on the spectrum, followed by regular tacos, then Volcano Tacos, Fiery DLT, and then Cool Ranch DLT in a distant first place.
