The Philadelphia Phillies have found their replacement for former skipper Charlie Manuel. The Phillies have removed the interim tag on Ryne Sandberg and signed him to a three year contract that runs through the 2016 season. Sandberg is currently the only Hall of Fame player managing a major league ball club.
Ryne Sandberg has lead the team to a 18-16 record during his time with the club. Even though the record may not be very impressive, Sandberg appears to have what it takes to manage the Philadelphia Phillies. He worked his way through coaching in the minor leagues for six years before this year when he started the season as the Phillies third base coach. Ryne is very familiar with the younger players on the Phillies roster from his days as the Lehigh Valley IronPigs (Phillies AAA affiliate) manager. Now that he is the full time manager, he can continue to help their development. Sandberg appears to have the same work ethic that lead him to a Hall of Fame playing career. If he can manage to maintain the same work ethic he had as a player and teach it to the younger players on the Phillies, then Sandberg could be successful as the Phillies manager.
