Brian McCann signs with Yankees

The New York Yankees and catcher Brian McCann have came to a contract agreement. This contract is a 5 year deal worth $85 million, with an option for a 6th year. The Yankees have actively pursued McCann since the beginning of free agency and rightfully so. McCann was the best available catcher in free agency and provides much needed pop in a questionable Yankee lineup. This gives the Yankees stability at the catcher position for the first time in years. Ever since Jorge Posada retired, the Yankees have had a hard time finding someone to stick in the spot. Now they have there guy.

This past season McCann has been in the spotlight for applying the “unwritten rules” of baseball. He confronted both Jose Fernandez and Carlos Gomez at home plate after they showboated after their home runs. This shows that McCann will stand up for his teammates and his pitching staff. Not only did the Yankees get a great offensive and defensive catcher, but they got a leader and a man that is hungry for postseason success. Money well spent by the Yankees.

The big question is, now that the Yankees have spent money on McCann, will they have enough money to stay in the Robinson Cano sweepstakes? The Yankees will still be competitive in pursuing Cano, but they aren’t going to go after him at his current asking price.
