Aaron Rodgers wins Second PFWA NFL MVP Award

The Seattle Seahawks are the hottest team in football right now. but the hottest player in football is on the Green Bay Packers.  On Wednesday, the Pro Football Writers of America, or PFWA, announced that they are naming Green Bay Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers as the Offensive MVP of the NFL. This is the second time Rodgers has won this award, the first coming back in 2011. He becomes the 7th player to win the PFWA award more than twice in their career.

Rodgers had an outstanding season, leading the Packers to their 3rd straight NFC North title and to the playoffs for the 5th time since becoming the starter in 2008. He also won Super Bowl XLV and took MVP honors of that game.

Aaron Rodgers stats this season were phenomenal. He completed 66% of his passes while throwing for 4,381 yards. He also amassed 38 touchdowns while only throwing 5 interceptions, the lowest of his career. His 112 passer rating was the second highest of his career and second highest this season, only behind Tony Romo of the Dallas Cowboys.

Rodgers broke a league record this year by having 8 games, including 4 straight, of three-touchdown and zero-interception games. He also tied a Packers record of 8 games with 300 or more passing yards. Rodgers is currently the only quarterback career rating over 100.

Aaron Rodgers is definitely deserving of this award, putting up huge numbers again. What makes Aaron Rodgers such a special player is his consistency. He has played in 15 or 16 games in every season except one, and he puts up huge numbers every year. In the seasons in which he’s played at least 15 games, he has never had a completion percentage of less than 63.6 and that was in his first full year. He has averaged 35 touchdowns and only 8 interceptions over this time as well. Rodgers also averages 4,285 yards per season and only once has had a quarterback rating under 103. He not only one of the most consistent players in the NFL, he is the undeniable leader of the Packers. The offense is designed and geared around him, and when he’s not playing they struggle.

Rodgers is also one of the toughest players around. He has taken many hits, and has played through several injuries. The most notable one was in the first round of this year’s playoffs against the Detroit Lions. Rodgers had to leave the game after suffering a slight calf tear, only to comeback midway through the 3rd quarter, to lead the Packers to a victory. Then last week against the Dallas Cowboys, Aaron Rodgers was still feeling the effects of the injury. Unable to scramble around like normal, which is one of his best weapons; Rodgers hung in the pocket, and threw two touchdowns to lead the Packers back from an 8-point deficit. The Packers won the game 26-21 and leading Green Bay to their third NFC Championship since he’s been starting.

At this pace, Rodgers will probably win a few more MVP awards, as he shows no signs of slowing down anytime soon. Continued seasons like this should also lead Aaron Rodgers to be an easy selection for the Hall of Fame. Although he’s only looking towards this week’s match-up with the Seattle Seahawks. If Rodgers wins this game he will get into his second Super Bowl in the last 8 years.
