Exit Sandman: A Tribute to Mariano Rivera from a Boston Red Sox Fan

s a member of the Red Sox Nation, I have grown up hating the New York Yankees; but on Sunday afternoon, my hatred for the New York Yankees was pushed aside as the team honored a future Hall of Famer, Mariano Rivera.

Rivera, baseball’s all-time saves leader with 652, was joined by former NYY manager, Joe Torre, and former teammates Jorge Posada, Bernie Williams, and Tino Martinez during a 50 minute ceremony that included chants from the fans “Stay One More Year!”

Rivera will say goodbye to the game, and a case can be made that he is one of the most dominant pitcher–not just closer– of his era. Think about it, in his career hitting records set by Babe Ruth, Hank Aaron, and Roger Maris were all shattered.

Rivera has 44 saves this season and a 2.21 ERA.

He has an all-time high 42 post-season saves and is part of five World Series championships.

With Rivera gone, it’s time to start talking about who will replace him?

Also, with Rivera gone, no one will ever wear the No. 42 again. It will definitely be weird to see in 2014.

While the sendoff for Rivera was a site to see, it was even better to see the New York Yankees lose to the San Francisco Giants on Sunday afternoon 2-1.

Sorry Yankee fans! My Red Sox cap had to come back on sooner or later.
