I went to see “Captain America: The Winter Soldier” on the night it premiered because I am a tool. I have to say it ranks up there as one of the better comic book movies in recent years. Captain America of course is part of the Avengers whose movie was filled with lots of laughs and a pretty mediocre plot. However, all the Avenger based films since then that have came out really stepped up their game. “Thor: The Dark World” was pretty amazing and I actually didn’t see “Iron Man 3” but that’s probably a good thing. Looking forward to “Hulk: Look Who’s Smashing Now”

On to the actual film. Most of this film doesn’t even feel like a comic book movie especially since some shit goes down with S.H.I.E.L.D and Captain America has to go on the run in civilian clothes while pretending to not want to have sex with Black Widow, played by the always attractive and helpful Scarlett Johansson. The first half of this film has lots “Oh my god!” and “Holy crap!” moments. Also every character in the film whether they’re good or bad seems to get shot at least four times. The main villain “The Winter Soldier” is psychotic and terrifying, yet also sad and probably in need of some friendship. He answers to a higher and more terrifying power that I shall not reveal in this review. The big showdown at the end of the film is downright badass even though it suffers from a touch of Marvel cheese (Corny jokes that break the tension) but the fight scene itself is probably one of the better fight scenes that you will see in any movie ever.

Blocked the stone cold stunner, now you’re getting stabbed in the butt!
Other highlights of the film include Anthony Mackie playing the obscure “Falcon”, his character is great even though the fact that Captain America just happens to befriend the one guy in Washington D.C. who has a flying suit is really convenient. Robert Redford is in this film as some character I’ve never heard of, but he’s a pretty awesome as well.

The only things that bothered me in this film was the fact that Captain America’s love interest from the 1st movie, Peggy Carter is still alive in 2014! She’d be nearly 100 years old at this point. Captain America goes to see her and has got to be thinking “Damn I should have tapped that ass when I had the chance.” Also not a single member of the Avengers makes any kind of cameo? I would have thought Thor would have at least sent Captain America a postcard from Asgard at some point during the film.
Brush your teeth or I’ll smash them to pieces!
Anyway, I highly recommend seeing this movie even you don’t like comic book films. It plays more as a spy/action movie and Chris Evans is maybe wearing his Captain America costume for like 23 minutes total. Also if you like exploding airships and Nazi scientists that have been turned into computers then this is the film for you!
My score: 9/10
